“This National Rescue Dog Day… open your heart to a second chance.
Every day, rescue pointers like ours at The English Pointer Rescue Service are waiting — for love, for safety, for a forever home.
Celebrating National Rescue Dog Day: Giving Second Chances and Finding Forever Homes
Each year on May 20th, animal lovers across the country come together to celebrate National Rescue Dog Day—a day dedicated to recognizing the countless rescue dogs who have overcome adversity to become loving companions, and the people who work tirelessly to give them a second chance.
What Is National Rescue Dog Day?
National Rescue Dog Day was founded by Lisa Wiehebrink, author and executive director of Tails That Teach, to bring awareness to the number of dogs in shelters and to encourage adoption. The goal is not only to celebrate rescue dogs but also to highlight the importance of giving these deserving animals a safe, loving, and permanent home.
Millions of dogs enter shelters each year due to abandonment, abuse, or inability of owners to care for them. Many of these dogs are loyal, loving, and simply in need of a fresh start.
Why Rescue Dogs Matter
Rescue dogs come in all breeds, sizes, and temperaments, just like our wonderful Pointer Rescue Dogs and many have endured difficult pasts—neglect, abuse, or homelessness. Yet, when given love, structure, and care, they often become some of the most loyal and affectionate pets.
Rescuing a dog doesn’t just save one life—it also makes room for shelters to help more animals. In return, adopters often say that their rescue dogs saved them right back, offering comfort, companionship, and unconditional love.
How to Celebrate National Rescue Dog Day
There are many ways to honor this meaningful day:
-
Adopt, Don’t Shop: If you’re ready for a pet, consider adopting from a shelter or rescue organisation like ours instead of buying from a breeder or pet store.
-
Foster a Dog: If adoption isn’t an option right now, fostering can help dogs transition from shelter life to a home environment while they wait for their forever families.
-
Volunteer: Shelters always need help—whether it’s walking dogs, cleaning kennels, or assisting at events.
-
Donate: Monetary contributions, food, bedding, toys, and other supplies can make a big difference for rescue organisations. Help our dogs at Pointer Rescue by donating today!
-
Spread the Word: Use your social media to share adoptable dogs and success stories from our website. Every share could lead to a new home for a rescue Pointer dog.
A Story of Hope
Every rescue dog has a story. Take Marley, for example—a timid Labrador mix who was found wandering the streets, malnourished and afraid. After months of care in a local rescue and patience from a foster family, Marley transformed into a confident, playful companion. Today, she’s a beloved member of her forever home, proving that love and patience can truly change a life.
