My name is Lara… and this is my story.

Once, I was nothing.

Or at least, that’s how it felt.

I was left behind… abandoned… and thrown into a cold government pound in Murcia in Spain, as if my life didn’t matter, as if I had never been loved at all. The world became a very frightening place, full of loud noises, unfamiliar smells, and people I didn’t understand. I learned quickly that being small and quiet was safer than being seen.

No one will ever truly know what happened to me before that… but my heart remembers. My body remembers. And sometimes, when people come too close, I still feel that fear rise up inside me.

I was a trembling shadow of a dog back then — a little soul who shook constantly, too scared to hope, too scared to trust.

But then… something changed.

Kind hands reached out for me.  Kay found me and got in touch with Pointer Rescue and got me to her kennels.  The trouble was is I was so scared and I was not progressing so our team asked Penny, one of the special angels in Spain to take me to her home to see what she could do to help me.  Gentle voices spoke my name. And I was given a chance — a real one.

I was moved away from the kennels to a home in Albox, Spain, where I now live with two kind dogs who have become my whole world. They show me every day that life can be safe… that sometimes humans can be gentle… that love doesn’t always hurt.

I have been here for seven weeks now, and I am trying — really trying.

I don’t shake anymore.

I wag my tail when my foster Angel, Penny comes home, my whole body wiggling with quiet excitement. I run around happily… though I still need my doggy friends beside me to feel brave enough to be close. I follow them everywhere — their shadow, their little sister — learning from them how to trust this new life.

I love my comforts now… soft beds, warm rooms, and especially the sofa (it might be my favourite place in the whole world actually). I sleep peacefully in my bed at night, close to the others, feeling safe.

Food? Oh, I love my food. I eat in my own quiet space where I feel secure, and I never say no to a tasty treat. Sometimes, if I’m feeling brave, I will even come and gently take one from your hand.

And sometimes… when I feel really safe… I will come for a little fuss too.

But I am still learning.

People can still be scary when they approach me. I need time. I need patience. I need kindness that doesn’t rush me or expect too much too soon. I am what they call a “work in progress”… but I promise you, I am worth it.

I am a gentle soul. I don’t have a bad bone in my body.

What I need most is a calm, loving home — a quiet place where I can continue to grow at my own pace. I will need another kind dog by my side, one I can cuddle close to, one who can show me how to be brave and trust my new human family.

I don’t think I could do this alone… but with a friend, I can be so much more.

There is something else you should know about me.

My blood tests showed that I have Leishmaniasis, and I started treatment last October. I take daily medication (Allopurinol), and the rescue will support my medication costs. One day, with hope, I may even go into remission.

I know that might make some people look away…

But please don’t.

Please don’t let that be the reason I am overlooked.

Because I am still here. Still trying. Still learning how to love.

I didn’t choose my past… but I dream of a future.

A future where I am safe.
Where I am understood.
Where I am loved not in spite of who I am… but because of it.

If you have patience in your heart, kindness in your hands, and a quiet home where I can finally feel at peace…

I promise I will give you everything I have.

My trust will be slow.
My love will be gentle.
But it will be real.

I am Lara.

And I am still waiting for my furever.  x
